Active Approach -
Monitor network parameters of registered cellular phones
An active base station is implemented with the SDR USRP B210.
Once the base station is up and running, we can attach cellular phones nearby and begin in
monitoring reception strength parameter, in order to determine our distance to them.
The work assumption is that in disaster situation, all other networks are down and all phones in the area have no network to connect with.
The base station was modified such that any cellular phone in range (which isn’t connected to other network) could register to it without even touching the phone!
Meaning, in case of a disaster, and no other networks in range, all cellular phones in range to my base station will perform an automatic registration to my network even when the phones are in the victim's pockets.
The most important parameter to us is RXLEV, a number from 0 to 63 that corresponds to a dBm value range-meaning the received signal strength in the cellular phone that can be translated into distance.
